The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has surpassed 15 lakh in cumulative sales, marking a significant milestone for the vehicle in India. Launched in March 2012, the Ertiga has sold 15,13,574 units as of August 2026.

A Practical Entry into the MPV Segment

The Ertiga was Maruti Suzuki’s first major venture into the MPV market. It offered a compact, three-row vehicle with good fuel efficiency and access to Maruti Suzuki’s extensive service network. This made it an attractive option for buyers seeking a seven-seater without the bulk and cost of larger vehicles. At launch, it filled a gap for those wanting a practical family car without compromising on running costs or accessibility.

Over its 14-year run, the Ertiga has maintained a focus on space, practicality, and running costs rather than premium features. The availability of a factory-fitted CNG option has further enhanced its appeal to cost-conscious buyers, offering a fuel-efficient alternative to petrol.

Steady Growth, Then a Surge

Sales data reveals a steady start, with annual figures hovering around 60,000 units for several years. From FY2012-13 to FY2018-19, sales ranged between 59,822 and 76,375 units annually, reflecting consistent demand. A notable increase occurred in FY2020, when sales surpassed 90,000 units, reaching 90,543. The real surge came later, with sales exceeding 1 lakh units in FY2022 and reaching 1,98,327 units in FY2026.

The Ertiga narrowly missed the 2 lakh mark in FY2026, falling just 1,673 units short. It also achieved its highest monthly sales in July 2026, with 21,606 units sold. This growth trajectory mirrors the broader trend of increasing demand for practical, affordable seven-seaters in India. While the Ertiga’s formula hasn’t drastically changed, its consistent focus on value and efficiency has resonated with buyers.

A Key Player in Maruti Suzuki’s UV Strategy

The Ertiga’s success has significantly contributed to Maruti Suzuki’s growth in the utility vehicle segment. Its performance has helped Maruti Suzuki strengthen its position in the competitive UV market.

The current generation, introduced in 2018, builds on the original concept with more space, improved features, and petrol and CNG engine options. It competes with models like the Kia Carens and Toyota Rumion, maintaining its position as a value-oriented choice in the seven-seat market. Its ability to balance affordability with functionality continues to attract a wide range of buyers.

From its initial sales of just over 1,000 units in the launch month to surpassing 15 lakh units, the Ertiga has become a cornerstone of Maruti Suzuki’s lineup. Its strong sales performance in recent years, including a record 1,98,327 units in FY2026, demonstrates the enduring demand for practical and affordable seven-seaters in India. The Ertiga’s consistent growth shows its relevance in a rapidly evolving automotive market.
