Mercedes-AMG is reviving its Black Series with the upcoming AMG GT model. The car, spotted testing at the Nürburgring, marks a significant step in Mercedes-AMG’s ongoing effort to reclaim its performance legacy, following the recent launch of the CLE 646.

The new Black Series will feature a version of the M177 Evo engine, also found in the CLE 646. This flat-plane-crank V8 is expected to produce over 720 horsepower and potentially exceed 800 horsepower. The engine’s capability to surpass 800bhp is well-documented, as a variant of the previous Black Series engine powers the Aston Martin Valhalla, contributing 817bhp to its 1064bhp hybrid hypercar setup.

A motorsport-inspired powerhouse

Mercedes-AMG has been teasing the Black Series since 2025 with the Concept Track Sport car. Development has taken place across multiple circuits, including Bilster Berg, Portimao, and Monteblanco, ensuring the car’s performance is finely tuned. It’ll be a Black Series with motorsport pedigree too, given the extensive changes to the road car will also inform the limits to which Mercedes-AMG’s next GT3 racing car will be allowed to be pushed in terms of aero regulations.

A full width and height swan-neck rear wing featuring a drag reduction system, a diffuser you could park an A-class in, and box-sill sections to provide a home for the side-exit exhaust are all fitted to the development cars. So too is a front splitter that will be adjustable to balance the aero when the rear DRS is open. And AMG One hypercar-style active aero-winglets in the top of the front wings to allow air out of the wheelarches.

Performance upgrades and pricing

In addition to its powerful engine, the Black Series is expected to feature a 48-volt mild hybrid system for improved efficiency, balancing performance with emissions compliance. The active suspension of the standard AMG GT will likely be replaced with adjustable coilovers developed in partnership with KW Automotive, similar to those used in the CLE 646.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is anticipated to launch next year with a price tag around £300,000. While not as limited as the CLE 646 (only 30 units), it will be a flagship model in the AMG GT range, showcasing the brand’s ultimate performance capabilities. Its position as the jewel in the crown of the AMG GT lineup shows its role as the most direct challenge to the Porsche 911, with variants like the GT55 and GT Pro already targeting specific 911 models.
