Rüsselsheim, Germany — Opel, Stellantis Germany, and real estate developer VGP celebrated a key milestone this week with the structural completion of the grEEn-campus, a new global headquarters for Opel and the future administrative center for Stellantis in the city.
The event on September 3 marked the end of major construction on the central buildings of the 114,000-square-meter site on Mainzer Straße. Interior work will now proceed in phases, keeping the project on schedule for a 2027 finish.
A modern hub for design and administration
The campus will unite Opel’s operations for the first time. The complex features a 23,000-square-meter administrative building, a 36,000-square-meter research and development center with an attached Design Center, and a 55,000-square-meter parking structure. It will accommodate corporate offices, Stellantis Germany’s leadership, and teams developing future Opel models.
Florian Huettl, CEO of Opel & Vauxhall and managing director of Stellantis Germany, described the project as a modern and sustainable workplace. He linked the development to Stellantis’ Piano Futuro Germania strategy, calling it a strong signal for the site’s future.
VGP Group CEO Jan Van Geet highlighted the project’s industrial importance. He noted that the team is transforming a historic industrial site into a future-ready location. Rüsselsheim’s mayor, Patrick Burghardt, said the campus demonstrates a commitment to sustainable urban growth, offering high-quality jobs and strengthening the city’s economy.
The design meets DGNB Gold certification, a German sustainability standard. Features include low-carbon materials, energy-efficient systems, and a focus on occupant comfort.

Energy from the ground up
The site will use two main energy sources: a photovoltaic system on a green roof and a large geothermal plant beneath the parking structure. The green roof will support biodiversity, improve the microclimate, and provide natural cooling. The geothermal system, one of Germany’s largest, will store ground heat and use it for climate control year-round.
Most of the electricity will come from on-site solar panels.
The initiative aligns with Made for Germany, a program uniting companies and investors to bolster the country’s industrial base. Opel and Stellantis view the campus as a way to strengthen Rüsselsheim’s role in developing future vehicles.
With the structural phase complete, crews are now focusing on interior work. The timeline remains unchanged, with the campus set to open in late 2027. It will bring together Opel’s leadership, research, and design teams in one location for the first time.
The campus represents a broader effort to modernize Germany’s industrial infrastructure while prioritizing sustainability. For Rüsselsheim, a city with deep automotive history, the project could reshape its identity around innovation and design.
