Peugeot Revives RCZ Nameplate with Electric Concept Car

The RCZ Vision concept marks the first time the short-lived coupe nameplate has been used since the original RCZ ended production in 2015. Unlike its predecessor, the new concept is fully electric, powered by a solid-state battery pack just 110mm tall. The system delivers 493bhp of power, though the source of that output, whether one or two motors, remains unclear. Efficiency is listed at 5.4 miles per kWh.

Electric Powertrain and Design Elements

The RCZ Vision is built on Stellantis’ STLA One architecture, the group’s next-generation electric platform. Design cues from the original RCZ remain, notably the double-bubble roof, but the concept reinterprets this feature with a glass canopy stretching from the hood to the rear. The electric powertrain eliminates the need for a traditional engine bay, allowing for a more spacious front section. While technical specifications beyond power and efficiency are limited, the focus appears to be on showcasing future technologies rather than immediate production plans.

Unlike its predecessor, which featured cramped rear seats, the Vision concept offers more practical rear cabin space. The rear bench can seat two adults or fold flat to increase luggage capacity. This shift suggests Peugeot is considering broader usability in future designs, even for performance-oriented models.

Interior Innovation and Future Plans

The interior introduces the Hypersquare, a rectangular steering controller with thumb grips that replaces the traditional steering wheel. This system works with a steer-by-wire setup, removing the physical link between the steering wheel and front wheels. At low speeds, less than a full turn achieves maximum lock for easier maneuvering, while higher speeds reduce the steering ratio for stability. Peugeot claims this system filters out road vibrations, enhancing comfort, though some drivers may prefer tactile feedback for engagement.

Positioned behind the Hypersquare is a transparent i-Cockpit display, continuing Peugeot’s signature cockpit design. The asymmetrical seats are angled toward the car’s center, promoting a driver-focused layout. The concept also explores materials and ergonomics that could carry into future models, balancing futurism with practicality.

There are no current plans to produce the RCZ Vision. Instead, it serves as a preview of Peugeot’s evolving design and technology direction. The Hypersquare is confirmed for the upcoming E-208 GTI, indicating that some innovations may reach production sooner than others. Peugeot CEO Alain Favey stated, “With emotion at its heart, this manifesto embodies the boldness of PEUGEOT and shows that design and technology can work together seamlessly to create an experience that is instinctive, refined and intensely desirable.”
